Participants in research studies are a vital element of research.
The willingness of participants to contribute their time, data, and personal experiences is essential, as the information collected may be used by researchers across the globe.
Data collected in research studies often includes medical histories, genetic information, memory and thinking assessments, and lifestyle details. Researchers rely on this information to investigate the causes and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s is a disease that progresses over time. Many studies follow participants for years – even decades! The long-term commitment of participants allows researchers to track changes in memory and thinking, behaviour, and physical health, providing critical insights into disease trajectory.
RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS
The ongoing success of several studies has proved that the valuable data collected from research participants can result in breakthroughs in medical science, leading to a better future for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
Some of the research studies that Alzheimer’s Research Australia has been supporting have been running for more than 25 years. We also have studies that have just started and are actively recruiting participants.
Each study takes a unique approach towards understanding Alzheimer’s disease, enriching knowledge in the field.
All studies have different requirements. For instance, some require a visit to our facilities every two years. Others involve prolonged lifestyle changes (such as diet and exercise) over multiple years.
Participation may involve assessment of:
- memory and thinking
- markers of brain health
- blood biomarkers
- sleep patterns
- social activity
- fitness levels
Strict privacy protocols are followed to ensure that personally identifiable information remains private and is never disclosed.
Participants may withdraw from a Clinical Research Study at any time and for any reason, without explanation. Research participation is entirely free.
There are still many different areas of research to investigate and most need volunteers.
