Over 480,000 Australians are currently living with dementia. With more than 1.5 million people involved in their care, the burden on individuals and families is overwhelming.
Every day, 244 Australians receive a dementia diagnosis, and without breakthroughs in medical research, these numbers are projected to escalate rapidly.
Our Research Framework for Dementia Diagnosis, Prevention, Treatment, and Cure lays out a clear direction and purpose for Alzheimer’s Research. It aims to deliver solutions for all those at risk of or affected by dementia and has been designed to encompass the needs of scientists, clinicians, research participants and patients.
At Alzheimer’s Research Australia, a well-defined strategy for Alzheimer’s research is not just a tool; it’s an important guide towards advancing our understanding of this disease, finding effective interventions, and ultimately working towards a cure.
The Research Framework ensures that our efforts are focused, and we make steady progress towards our ultimate goal.

Research Framework for Dementia Understanding, Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment
01.
Understanding Brain Diseases Across the Lifespan
- Childhood dementia
- Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease
- Late-onset sporadic Alzheimer’s disease
- Cerebral amyloid angiopathy
- Other causes of dementia
02.
Screening and Diagnosis
- Identify blood-based biomarkers for diagnosis and monitoring disease progression.
- Develop eye imaging as a non-invasive, cost-effective diagnostic tool.
- Create novel memory, thinking and clinical tests to accurately diagnose dementia and screen for potential risks.
03.
Prevention
- Develop prevention strategies that target modifiable risk factors and have the potential to act before symptom onset.
- Memory stimulation strategies to delay the onset of symptoms due to brain changes.
- Develop multimodal interventions to prevent dementia.
04.
Management and Treatment
- Develop new treatments that can better manage symptoms or even cure the disease.
- Develop strategies to support people with dementia in remaining independent and functioning well, including programs such as the positive use of music, addressing hearing loss, improving nutrition, and novel drug development.
05.
Developing Resources
- Building world class data sets to facilitate research globally. Conduct Observational and Intervention studies to achieve objectives.
- Comprehensive research data and effective clinical tools are designed, alongside the establishment of strong local, national, and international collaborations resulting in new screening methods, early diagnosis, better treatments and management of dementia, and more informed government policies.
