Honouring the Legacy of Peter Stevens
Celebrating a Life of Dedication, Leadership, and Compassion at Alzheimer's Research Australia
It is with immense respect and deep gratitude that we remember Peter Stevens, a former Board member of Alzheimer’s Research Australia, who made the courageous and personal choice to determine his own time of passing. Peter’s life was marked by his unquestionable dedication, his visionary leadership, and his heartfelt commitment to advancing the mission of ARA.
During his tenure on the Board, Peter was a guiding force, helping to shape the direction of our research within the organisation with great wisdom and much compassion. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the work we do and the lives we touch, through our research. Whether in strategic discussions, fundraising efforts, or community outreach, Peter consistently demonstrated a clear commitment to our cause.
Beyond his professional achievements, Peter was known for his kindness, integrity, and the genuine care he showed for others. He believed deeply in the importance of our mission and worked vigorously to ensure that ARA continued to make strides in Alzheimer’s research.
As we reflect on his life and legacy, we are reminded of the profound impact one person can have on an organisation and its future. Known to many of the staff on a personal level and, always one to share a laugh and a joke. Peter’s influence will continue to be felt, not just in the ongoing work of ARA, but in his interactions and generosity of his donations too, his memory will inspire us to carry forward the values he so passionately upheld.
Peter spent his last week making his goodbyes, and he shared with us that he had particularly enjoyed some private time that he spent with our Director of Research, Professor Ralph Martins. While they reminisced on how far Ralph and the team have come from the early days, they also shared the vision for future research and disclosed the hope that with detection, comes intervention and with discovery comes treatment and with all of that there is a prospect to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. His family, friends, colleagues and the team from ARA gathered at the Royal Perth Golf Club to say farewell and in true Peter Style he had asked for bright colours and fancy dress to be worn. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when he shared his life story and of his love for his children and his beloved Melva.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Peter’s family and loved ones during this time. His presence will be greatly missed, but his legacy will endure in the work we continue in his honour.
With deepest respect and gratitude, All at ARA.
