Dr Fernando’s work delves into the gut-brain axis and the role of the gut microbiome in neurogenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Dr Fernando has been part of the Alzheimer’s Research Australia team since 2012. Since receiving her PhD at Massey University, New Zealand, in 2011, Dr Fernando has focused on understanding the role of short and medium-chain fatty acids in the prevention of Alzheimer’s using cell culture and clinical trials.
Dr Fernando’s work focuses on exploring the role of the gut microbiome in neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and investigating the potential benefits of modifying the gut microbiome for brain health. Her research seeks to understand the potential benefits of modifying the gut microbiome for brain health.
Dr Fernando is currently supervising a team of international students who are considering various factors of the gut-brain connection which may assist in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future.
